Osteoarthritis is one of the most common types of arthritis, and it can affect joints anywhere in the body. Arthritis occurs when cartilage between the joints wears down, exposing the bones and causing them to rub against each other. This causes swelling and pain in the joint and will limit your range of motion. Osteoarthritis starts slower and gradually worsens over time. The base of the big toe, known as the first metatarsophalangeal, or MTP joint, is a common site of osteoarthritis. When osteoarthritis occurs in the toe, it is also known as Hallux Rigidus.
