A Metabolism Boost: Green Coffee Beans
You may have heard of green coffee beans from Dr. Oz's recent television story. It is amazing how a material we've always known about is suddenly discovered as an incredibly potent agent for fat burning.
What is a green coffee bean extract?
A green coffee bean extract is an extract of unroasted,
green coffee beans. simply put, Green Coffee Beans are Coffee Beans
that are fresh and have not been roasted. Green coffee extract has been
used as a weight-loss supplement and as an ingredient in other
weight-loss products.
The coffee you usually see is brown
because the beans are roasted at a tempetaure of 475 degrees. However,
coffee beans are naturally green, and hold more nutrients in them before
the roasting process.
In 2011, a study found out that green
coffee beans contain a compound called Chlorogenic Acid, which is an
active weight loss compound found in pure green coffee beans. This
compound is destroyed in the high temperature process of roasting the
beans. Researchers believe that this compound keeps down the levels of
glucose absorption, thereby aiding the body's fat burning rate.
The study
tested the efficacy of green coffee bean extract on 16 overweight young
adults. These participants were divided into a placebo group and a
group that was consuming the extract. Thought the study did not involve
many participants, the researchers were surprised to see that the
participants in the extract group lost an average of 17 pounds in 5
months, without making other changes to their diet or exercise regiment.
What's even more interesting is that these particiapnts saw, on
average, a 16% decrease in their total body fat.
The average calorie intake for these
participants was 2,400 calories. The average they burnt through
exercise? 400 calories. Even with the other needs of the body thoughout
the day, that is not enough to explain the drop in weight.
Since then, ABC News, CBS News, and Science Daily News
have all covered research stories about the success of green coffee
beans in boosting the body's fat burning rate. Another recent study
published on WebMD conducted a similar study with a new group of
overweight adults, again attributing its success to Cholorgenic Acid.
What green coffee bean extract should be used?
Since Dr. Oz did a study on green coffee beans on television, a few extracts have made the claim to be green coffee bean extract. My #1 recommended product, that has all these conditions, is Pure Green Coffee Bean. To release the full benefits of this material, one must make sure that:
1. The green coffee bean extract is 100% pure
Make sure that the label says pure.
That means no additional ingredients were added, not even the smallest
amount. No fillers, no binders, no taste or color agents were added.
There should only be one ingredient in the ingredient list - green
coffee bean extract.
(Ingredients you can safely ignore if added at the bottom of the label: Gelatin, calcium carbonate, and magnesium stearate.)
2. It contains a Chlorogenic Acid level of at least 40-50%
Cholorogenic acid is the main fat
burning compound in the extract. Green coffee beans are the most potent
plant source of chlorogenic acid. A level of 40-50%, then, is a must to
get potent effects.
3. Is at least 400mg per capsule
Make sure that the capsules you are
getting are at least 400-800mg. Smaller amounts might be destroyed by
the digestion process, and lose their potency.
Where to get it?
In a previous post about Green coffee
bean extract, I was asked where one could find it. Well, it can be
found at a number of health shops. However, remember to make sure this
is the pure extract, and not something else. If you don't know of a shop
near you that carries the extract, my #1 recommendation is Pure Green Coffee Bean.
