Injecting a Child with HIV to Battle Cancer?

Injecting a Child with HIV to Battle Cancer?

Yes, this is real. Doctors have injected a six year old cancer patient with the HIV virus. No, they aren't monsters, they have actually saved her life!

6 year old Emma was dying from Leukemia, and her prognosis didn't give her much time. The problem was that her immune system was not able to fight off the quickly multiplying cancer cells, and they were ravishing this poor girl's body from the inside.

Enter a team of doctors with a revolutionary plan: First, they harvest some of Emma's white blood cells (T cells), that are responsible for fighting the cancer. Then they genetically modify them to 'see' and react to the cancer cells. The HIV virus, engineered NOT to cause the disease, was used to reprogram the immune cells in a way that is still too complicated for us to do cell by cell. But the HIV virus, because if its method of operation, can reprogram cells quickly, just like it does when it causes the disease.

So in this case, the HIV virus is actually the hero. Who would have believed it? Watch this video to get more details about this breakthrough in medicine
