14 Ancient Theaters of Greek Roman Antiquity
The remains of ancient Greek and
Roman theaters lie scattered around the Mediterranean. The Greek
theaters were huge, open-air structures constructed on hill slopes. On
the other hand, Roman theaters, although heavily influenced by the
Greeks, were built upon their own foundations. Theaters originated in
ancient Athens where they were originally used by the Athenians to host
festivals honouring Dionysus, the god of fertility and wine. These
festivals often featured dramatic performances of tragedy, satyr and comedy plays.
